Once Upon A Time performance space was created in response to teacher and student needs for an outdoor gathering space. The raised deck and paved semi-circle each offer flexibility as the “stage” for poetry readings, singing, storytelling, plays and music by individuals or groups. Clay paving tiles were created by students and installed over a concrete base. The deck was built using re-cycled plastic decking. Oversized pencils and trees help to define the performance space within the larger schoolground. The performers could be located on the stage, or within the audience `/1 circle so that the audience could become a part of the performance. It begs the question, “who are the actors here?”
The project was built in 2006 at MacDonald Elementary School in Vancouver’s East Side.
